Blood donation eligibility in India
Use this page as a quick self-check before you walk into a camp. Final eligibility is always decided by the medical officer at the collection centre after examination and lab screening.
Typical whole-blood criteria
- Age commonly 18–65 years for routine voluntary donation.
- Weight usually 45 kg or more.
- Pulse, blood pressure, and temperature within acceptable ranges on the day of donation.
- Hemoglobin above the threshold set by the centre (often around 12.5 g/dL for men and 12.0 g/dL for women—confirm on site).
- At least 56 days since your last whole-blood donation (longer after certain procedures or events).
Common temporary deferrals
Be honest on the donor questionnaire. You may be asked to postpone donation if you recently had surgery, travel to malaria-endemic areas, new tattoos or piercings, certain vaccinations, pregnancy, or if you are recovering from infection. These rules protect both donor and recipient.
Before and after donation
Eat a regular meal, hydrate well, and sleep adequately. After donation, rest 10–15 minutes, drink extra fluids for a day, avoid heavy lifting or strenuous sport for about 24 hours, and keep the pressure bandage on for the time staff suggest.
